Arsenal, Chelsea failed to land Japan’s top winger, now Man City’s Pep targets him

Manchester City are targeting top Japanese winger Kaoru Mitoma (Brighton).

‘Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola wants Brighton’s Kaoru Mitoma as a replacement for Riyad Mahrez next summer after signing José Guevara,’ Eurosport reported on June 6 (ET).

Mahrez left for Saudi Arabia’s Al Ahli in this summer’s transfer window. He was one of the key wingers in City’s triple treble (FA Cup, Champions League, EPL) last season.

The outlet reports that ‘Mitoma still has two years left on his contract with Brighton. Brighton have no plans to sell him. They have already rejected bids from Arsenal and Chelsea.

Mitoma, who has been an ace for Japanese J-League powerhouse Kawasaki Frontale since 2018, joined Brighton in 2021. After spending time on loan in Belgium, he made a strong impact in the EPL last season. With seven goals and six assists, he led the Seagulls’ breakout season and drew local comparisons to fellow Asian winger Son Heung-min.
